The Center for Peace Advocacy and Sustainable Development (CEPASD) has taken the lead in advancing youth leadership across Africa through the successful hosting of the 5th Youth Model African Union (YMAU) Extraordinary Summit at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The high-level youth gathering, held in collaboration with the African Union Commission, UNDP, Model AU Ethiopia, and other partners, convened young Africans from 20+ countries to engage in a full simulation of AU decision-making organs.
Dignitaries attending the opening ceremony included H.E. Maxy Ognede, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ethiopia; H.E. Nebiat Getachew, Spokesperson of Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ms. Illwad Mohammed of AUC WGYD; and UNDP’s Mrs. Nirina Kiplagat.
In his opening remarks, the convener of the summit, Mr. Augustine Igweshi, highlighted the importance of investing in young people who are ready to take ownership of Africa’s destiny.
“YMAU is shaping a new generation of African thinkers, diplomats and leaders who understand governance, regional cooperation and the AU’s vision for the continent,” he said.
He further emphasized the need for African states to support structured youth engagement platforms like YMAU, noting that young people must be given the tools and opportunities to influence policies at national and regional levels.
The 2025 summit focused on the theme:
“Building a United Front to Advance the Cause of Justice for African Youth and People of African Descent through Reparations.”
Igweshi underscored that reparations are a matter of global justice, adding that African youth must be at the forefront of shaping narratives and policy responses. “This is not just a historical conversation; it is about the future of African dignity and development,” he stated.
Delegates participated in intensive simulations of the AU Assembly, the Peace and Security Council (AUPSC), and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), gaining skills in diplomacy, resolution drafting, negotiation, research and coalition building.
The summit positioned CEPASD as one of the leading civil society voices championing youth inclusion, peacebuilding and continental integration.
