Royal Gem Initiative (RGI), a Nigerian nonprofit organisation committed to improving the lives of women, children and underserved communities, will host a “Period Party” for teens and tweens in Lagos on October 10, creating a safe and engaging space for girls to learn about puberty, menstruation and menstrual cycle management.
For many girls, getting their first period can come with fear, embarrassment and confusion, especially when they have not been adequately prepared for the changes happening in their bodies. Limited access to menstrual products, inadequate information and the stigma surrounding menstruation can also make it difficult for girls to manage their periods confidently and participate fully in school and everyday activities.
Period Party is RGI’s response to that gap. The menstrual health education workshop is designed for girls both before and after their first period, helping them understand what to expect, learn how to manage their cycles and ask questions openly in a safe and age-appropriate environment.
The programme will cover puberty, menstruation and cycle management, creating an opportunity for girls to have honest conversations about their bodies without shame or embarrassment. The event will be facilitated by Ms Dami and will also include light refreshments.
The initiative builds on RGI’s broader work in health education, menstrual and maternal health and community outreach. The organisation has reached 50 communities and more than 100,000 girls and women, providing knowledge and support to help them make informed decisions about their health.
RGI’s menstrual health work began with providing sanitary products to girls in underserved communities. Over time, the organisation recognised that products alone were not enough. Girls also needed accurate information about their bodies, menstrual hygiene and reproductive health, as well as the confidence to discuss these issues and seek support when necessary.
Period Party therefore seeks to make menstrual education a more open and positive experience for young girls. Its message, “Changing the Conversation, One Cycle at a Time,” reflects RGI’s belief that girls should be prepared for menstruation before it begins and supported as they learn to manage it.
The Period Party will hold on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 12 noon in Lagos, Nigeria.
