Beyond the Silence: How SWAG Initiative Is Redefining Sexual and Reproductive Health Conversations for Young Nigerians

For many young girls in Nigeria, conversations around menstruation, consent, relationships, and sexual and reproductive health are still surrounded by silence.

Not because these issues are rare, but because they are often treated as uncomfortable topics that should be hidden, avoided, or whispered about.

Yet for adolescent girls and young women, these realities shape everyday life.

Some girls miss school because they cannot manage their periods safely. Others grow up without understanding consent, boundaries, or healthy relationships. Many navigate adolescence with little accurate information and a lot of shame, fear, or misinformation.

Stand With A Girl (SWAG) Initiative is working to change that.

Through two youth-focused interventions like the Campus Unites for Sexual and Reproductive Health (CUFS) Project and the Dignity in Menstruation (DIM) Project, SWAG is creating spaces where young people can learn, ask questions, and engage with sexual and reproductive health in ways that are practical, relatable, and free from judgment.

The organisation understands that awareness alone is not enough. Young people engage better when conversations reflect their realities, language, and experiences.

At Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, SWAG demonstrated what this approach looks like in practice. Sexual and reproductive health education was delivered through drama, poetry, music, and interactive dialogue sessions designed to make difficult conversations easier and more accessible.

One of the highlights was a Valentine-themed youth dialogue focused on love, consent, and relationships — topics many young people experience daily but rarely have safe spaces to discuss openly.

Instead of fear-based messaging or lectures, the session encouraged honesty, reflection, and meaningful conversations around respect, boundaries, and emotional wellbeing.

SWAG has also continued pushing boundaries in Northern Nigeria’s sexual and reproductive health space by hosting one of the region’s first Sexual and Reproductive Health fiestas and producing an SRH theme song to creatively engage young audiences.

For the organisation, innovation is not separate from advocacy, it is part of how real change happens.

Menstrual health remains another critical focus area.

For millions of girls, menstruation still comes with embarrassment, stigma, and barriers to education. Some girls stay home during their periods because they lack sanitary products or support. Others experience pain, discomfort, or shame in silence.

Research continues to show how menstrual-related challenges contribute to school absenteeism and negatively affect girls’ confidence, participation, and long-term opportunities.

Through the Dignity in Menstruation (DIM) Project, SWAG is tackling these realities directly.

The organisation has trained teachers, including male teachers, tricycle riders, and social media advocates to challenge myths and misinformation around menstruation. Religious leaders have also been engaged, recognizing the important role they play in shaping attitudes and community beliefs.

SWAG is additionally collaborating with education stakeholders within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to strengthen menstrual health awareness in schools and advocate for environments where girls can learn safely and confidently.

Because the reality is simple: a girl cannot fully thrive academically if she is struggling silently.

By combining education, creativity, advocacy, and community engagement, SWAG Initiative is helping shift conversations from secrecy to openness, from stigma to dignity, and from silence to empowerment.
