Impact Leader of the Month: Sharon Chiahemen

There are people whose work is difficult to place in just one category. Not because they lack focus, but because they understand that the world’s biggest challenges are connected. Climate action cannot be separated from education. Youth development cannot be separated from leadership. Disability inclusion cannot be separated from sustainable development. And meaningful change only happens when all these pieces come together.

That is what makes Sharon Chiahemen an impact leader.

Over the last decade, Sharon has quietly built a reputation as a leader who brings people together to solve complex social challenges. She has worked with governments, multilateral institutions, embassies, and international organisations to design programmes, build strategic partnerships, and lead behaviour change campaigns that strengthen communities and create lasting impact. While her work spans different sectors, the thread connecting it all is a commitment to making development more inclusive, practical, and accessible.

Today, she serves as the Chief Operations Officer of Let’s Talk Humanity Initiative, where she provides strategic leadership for programmes advancing disability inclusion and social development. She also recently served as the Team Lead of GreenWithGrin, a youth-led initiative making climate education accessible and engaging for young Africans. In both roles, Sharon has demonstrated that leadership is not simply about managing programmes; it is about creating environments where people can learn, contribute, and lead.

If there is one area that defines her work, it is her investment in young people.

Across Africa and beyond, Sharon has dedicated countless hours to mentoring emerging leaders, helping them see themselves not just as participants in development, but as people capable of shaping it. Through internationally recognised programmes including the Climate Education Leaders Fellowship (CELF), the Global Ties U.S. Young EcoStars Programme, and the PlasticWize Campus Training Programme, she has facilitated learning for more than 370 young people from 32 countries, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to drive climate action and sustainable development within their communities.

That commitment to developing others has also opened doors to global platforms. Sharon has represented Nigeria and African youth at international conferences, moderated conversations on development and inclusion, and contributed to discussions shaping the future of climate action. From being selected as one of 200 delegates to the Global Youth Climate Summit in Brazil, to representing Nigeria at the Second United Nations World Social Summit in Doha, serving as one of UNDP Eurasia’s 50 content creators for COP29, and featuring in the UNDP documentary I Am Sahel, her voice has become one that continues to influence conversations far beyond the communities where her work began.

Her journey has also seen her collaborate with organisations including the U.S. Embassy, the European Union, the Embassy of Sweden, the Brazilian Embassy, and several national and international institutions committed to advancing inclusive development. Yet, despite the recognition, Sharon’s work has never been about collecting titles or occupying global stages. It has always been about creating solutions that improve people’s lives.

Perhaps that is what makes her leadership stand out.

She understands that real impact is rarely built in moments of applause. It is built in classrooms where young leaders discover their voice, in communities where people begin to see new possibilities, in partnerships that bring different sectors together, and in the quiet decisions made every day to keep showing up for a cause bigger than oneself.

As Africa continues to navigate some of its most pressing social and environmental challenges, leaders like Sharon Chiahemen remind us that progress depends not only on bold ideas but on people willing to turn those ideas into action.
